Frequently asked questions

What is a Miyawaki forest?

A forest grown with the method developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki: several native saplings are planted per square metre on enriched soil, in layers of shrubs, sub-trees, trees and canopy. The trees compete for light, grow upward fast and form a multi-layered canopy that becomes self-sustaining after the first few years.

How much land do I need?

Less than most people think. We plan forests from a few hundred square metres up to large industrial campuses. The forest calculator on our home page gives a rough count of how many saplings your land could hold.

How fast does it grow?

Much faster than a conventional plantation. In our featured project, bare ground became a thriving forest of 12,000 trees in 13 months. A Miyawaki forest usually becomes self-sustaining after the first few years.

Which trees do you plant?

Only native species, chosen for the local soil and climate after a site survey. Each forest mixes shrub, sub-tree, tree and canopy species; our featured project used more than 50 of them.

Do you look after the forest after planting?

Yes. Our care and maintenance covers watering, weeding, mulching and monitoring until the forest becomes self-sustaining.

Can this be part of our CSR programme?

Environmental sustainability and the protection of flora and fauna are among the activities listed in Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013, and we share progress reports for your team. Please confirm eligibility for your own programme with your CSR advisor.

How much does a forest cost?

It depends on the area, the soil and the species. Tell us about your land and we will send you a plan with a clear quote.

Where do you work?

We are based in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Tell us where your land is and we will let you know what is possible.
